A spinning top is a toy designed to spin rapidly on the ground, the motion of which causes it to remain precisely balanced on its tip due to its rotational inertia. Such toys have existed since antiquity.

Spinning tops have been in existence for decades. However, the traditional way of making these tops are unfamiliar now. During my recent visit to India, I met a craftsman who has been making traditional spinning tops for 57 years. From the lathe to all the tiny tools required to design a spinning top are constructed by him. This process was further used to produce artifacts for my Master’s thesis exhibition.
